ANNOUNCEMENT: 19-23 June 2023 Netherlands Deeptech Innovation Mission to Japan on Semiconductors

19-23 June – Deeptech Innovation Mission Semiconductors – the Netherlands & Japan

Join us in building long-term bilateral Partnerships to maintain technological leadership

Japan is an indispensable player in the global semiconductor market, both in terms of business and research. Japan is focusing increasingly on the application side of semiconductors and has since July 2021 formulated a proactive policy to promote international collaboration in the field of semiconductors. As two like-minded countries that both have a vast ecosystem of semiconductors, collaboration between the Netherlands and Japan is attractive. The Netherlands and Japanese governments are currently discussing in which area’s they can increase their semicon innovation activities.

To put strength behind this partnership, the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Japan is organizing a week-long Innovation Mission on semiconductors starting June 19th. The ambition of this mission is to make an important step towards partnerships on relevant areas for cooperation, such as chip design, photonic and heterogeneous integration, packaging, equipment and sensors. With the presence of many prominent Japanese companies, this week offers a unique opportunity to share your thoughts and ideas for future collaboration between the two countries on semiconductor industries!

With a full program (see draft below), we offer businesses from the Netherlands the opportunity to share their ambitions with Japan and speak directly to many people from relevant Japanese companies and governmental agencies. Not only does this mission focus on the possibilities in business areas of semiconductors, but Research and Development strategists from Japanese companies will also be present. Furthermore, the ambitions and visions of Japanese companies with regards to semiconductors will be shared, as the role of the government.

All in all, this week offers many opportunities for partnerships between The Netherlands and Japan, as well as the chance to come in close contact with Dutch partners.

Draft Program

Monday 19 June Visit companies in Tokyo.
Tuesday 20 June Visit to company in Tokyo.
Network event in Imperial Hotel. Dutch companies can present their ambitions to a wide Japanese public, with opportunities to talk with Japanese companies afterwards in smaller setting.
Wednesday 21 June Visit companies and universities in Tokyo. In the afternoon/evening a 1-on-1 mini-matchmaking event, a visit to the Japanese government, and a network reception at the residence of the Ambassador.
Thursday 22 June
Research day: Visit NIMS and AIST in Tsukuba.
Friday 23 June
Visit to semiconductor hub – region in Kyushu: Kumamoto Prefecture, Kumamoto University and Kyushu University.

Target Group
This Innovation Mission is meant for professionals from Dutch industries and knowledge institutions in the area of semiconductors, with a focus on advanced chip design, integrated photonics or heterogenous integration.

Positioning
The Mission positions in deeptech areas like quantum, photonics and semiconductors and builds further on a series of activities, like the Innovation Mission on Quantum-Photonics of October 2022, the NL pavilions at the Semicon Japan Expo in December and the Nanotech Expo in January, various webinars like the Semiconductors Roadshow of last 25 October and the Webinar on chip-design and chip-integration of last 16 February.

Japan is an attractive high-tech partner for the Netherlands
The third economy in the world is strong and indispensable over the whole semiconductor value chain, form research to business and from policy to investments. Japan is investing heavily and moving fast to join forces with international partners and is showing increased interest in the Netherlands. For further reading, see this report of October 2022.
