Summary

NOST Tokyo and NFIA together with DSM recently hosted a biomedical material seminar in Tokyo. The seminar aimed to provide opportunities to meet people who are interested in the biomedical open innovation approach of the Netherlands.

The program of the seminar included presentations on subjects as national policy, top institutes, R&D programs, and regional industrial activities.

Promotion of collaboration

The objective of the seminar was to promote collaboration of biomedical material activities in the Netherlands between Dutch and Japanese companies and organizations. Christophe Dardel of the DSM Biomedical, Yuzo Toda of FUJIFILM Corporation, Mime Egami of Tokyo Women’s Medical University, and A.G.J. Staring of BMM gave presentations.

DSM

Christophe Dardel, President of DSM Biomedical presented its strategy to prepare for the change of society such as shifting the focus to the ageing society by providing biomedical materials including third generation biomaterials.

FUJIFILM

Yuzo Toda, the vice president of FUJIFILM Corporation, made a presentation on how the company successfully utilized their conventional production technology of photographic film for new production of biomedical materials.

Tokyo Women’s Medical University

Prof. Mime Egami, chief medical innovation officer, of Tokyo Women’s Medical University presented the development of production of cell sheet for regenerative medicine. Cell sheets are applicable for cornea, esophagus, heart, periodontal ligament, cartilage.

Dutch BioMedical Materials program

Emiel Staring is managing director of the Dutch BioMedical Materials program (BMM). He showed how the BMM program has worked successfully in the Netherlands. In addition, he presented the R&D results such as creation of heart valve from autologous cells and bioartifical kidney from BMM program.
