Sébastien Moitzheim, NOST Tokyo
During a four months traineeship for IA-Tokio, I focused on smart materials in Japan. With the preliminary research I got interested in a type of material that can create electricity from heat, so-called thermoelectric materials. I investigated the current state of affairs of these thermoelectric materials, ranging from the state-of-the-art research to governmental support and private investments. A summary of my research can be found in the attached presentation. Japanese scientist are working hard to increase the stability and efficiency of thermoelectric materials, which have the potential to be used in harvesting a large source of unused energy such as waste heat. Different applications for harvesting energy from heat are already being tested and developed which shows the motivation of Japan to investigate alternative energy sources.
