Seminar Biomass Torrefaction and co-firing

On Wednesday 18 May, the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Tokyo organized a seminar on Dutch experience and future perspectives to develop and implement biomass Torrefaction policies and technologies.

Here we present the agenda of the day and the presentations that were given during the seminar.

Biomass fulfills a pivotal role in reduction of GHG emissions worldwide and creates a future proof energy supply at the same time. When biomass is pre-treated using Torrefaction technology it becomes a carbon neutral bio-coal. A commodity product which can be handled like coal and can be fired in biomass plants and/or co-fired in traditional coal plants without logistic alterations.

The Netherlands has been a front runner in the development and implementation biomass Torrefaction technologies and policies. There is close and successful cooperation between power companies, knowledge institutes and technology suppliers.

The objective of the seminar was to give insight in our learnings and how we translated these learnings to projects which are under development right now.

Michiel Carbo and Edze Diemer of national energy research center ECN, Wim Willeboer of Essent Power B.V. / RWE Generation NL and Jan Brouwers of Torrefaction technology provider TorrCoal B.V. introduced their focus, role and experience in the pre-treatment and firing of biomass. Furthermore, Willie Smits gave insight in the development of a 320 metric ton/annum bio-coal production plant in Indonesia. The event ended with an open discussion, followed by a reception.
